Avoid leaving money on the table with these quick tips.

It’s one of the most stressful calls a driver can get: “We’ve determined your vehicle is a total loss.”

Many people accept the payout without asking questions — but that could mean losing out on hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Here's how to navigate a total loss claim and protect yourself from being short-changed.

First, understand how they calculate your car’s value

Insurance companies use third-party valuation tools (like CCC One or Mitchell) to determine your car’s Actual Cash Value (ACV). But these tools often undervalue vehicles.

What to check:

  • Are they using similar vehicles with the same mileage, trim, and condition?

  • Are there adjustments that seem unfair or excessive?

  • Did they include enough comps from your local area?

Example: A client in Charlotte had a Honda Civic that the insurance carrier valued at $8,200. After reviewing the valuation report, we challenged two low comps that had lower trim levels and significantly higher mileage. After some back and forth the payout was raised to $9,400.

Next, calculate your settlement offer

Your offer will be:ACV – Deductible – Salvage Value (if keeping the car)

If the numbers feel off, you’ll need to dig into the Total Lass Valuation and Settlement Summary. Remember - You can also request a revised market valuation.

You will need to provide valid reasons for the request and any supporting evidence you can include will only help your case.

Don’t forget these common oversights:

  • Sales tax: This should be included in the payout.

  • Title & registration fees: Often missed in first offers.

  • Rental car deadline: Your rental coverage usually ends 48-72 hours after a total loss OFFER. Don’t delay reviewing the documentation or you may cost yourself in out of pocket rental expenses.

Takeaway:

A total loss doesn’t have to mean total defeat. You have the right to ask questions and negotiate.
